If you have the RPC-2 firmware 40, you can make the drive to RPC-1 (region free). The trick is to put a jumper on the middle set of pins to the left of the digital audio out (on the far left of the back of the drive).
If you update or already have the firmware 41, which you have to anyway cause of it's reading problem with firmware 40... then set the jumper to exactly the same place which described for the old firmware 40. Then eachtime you boot your pc, hold the two buttons on the frontside of the dvd-panel pressed, then the drive became absolutely codefree (RPC-1). NOTICE: you have to do this everytime you boot up! otherwise it will just keep the old RPC-2 settings.

This drive is included in the newest Creative 6X kit. It's an OEM Panasonic SR-8584.
If you have have region locked firmware (x14A), you can use the region free Panasonic SR-8584 firmware c15C to make the drive region free.
After the flash the the drive will be reported as Matshita SR-8584.

This bioses correct two bug : Pulsing sound through the speakers and slow explorer when opened without disk in the DVD-drive. They also work with the Compaq GD-2500 and make the drive region free. Use the /c command to upgrade a Compaq drive.

Special note for firmware 1.6k : the Raite RDR-108H firmware version 1.6k is a speed-reduced firmware that was designed for the use of that drive in a stand-alone DVD player such as the Raite/Yamakawa 780/788. It is not for the use of the drive in a PC. The firmware does not support the higher DVD or CD speeds to reduce noise, and with this firmware, the drive will NOT work as slave. It is always set to master, ignoring the jumper setting, and will cause a conflict if it is installed as slave.

It seem the drive is detected as RPC-1 when there is no DVD in the drive. But it is RPC-2.
