- XVI released RegionX 1.0.1 for MAC OS X New feature include multilingual support (french and english for now). Region X allows you to control the region settings of your OS X DVD Player with region free drives. It will run on OS X only, so it does not replace the old Region version intended for Mac OS Classic.

- Cdrinfo published a very interresting review of the Pioneer DVR-A03 DVD-R/RW drive.
- About the recent RPC-1 firmware 1.03 for the Pioneer DVD-K11T drive, the firmware is confirmed to works correctly.
Badly the flash utility do not allow the drive to downgrade firmware. For owner of the drive with newer firmware like 1.04 or 1.05, >NIL: created a disguised K11T v1.05 RPC-1 firmware (be aware that the K11T 1.05 RPC-1 is actually a disguised 1.03 RPC-1 firmware with the revision number modified to allow the flash for newer drives).

- A new version of CDVDinfo version 1.35 is out.
- Added an utility to set the Combo Ricoh MP-9120 to UDMA mode.

With this utility, you can indefinitly reset the drive region code but also sets the new region of the drive that YOU have chosen from a menu ON-THE-FLY!

XVI provided some new patched firmware
- a Patched RPC-1 firmware 1X13 for LG DRN-8080B on PC version.
- a Patched RPC-1 firmware X16E for Hitachi GD-7000 on Mac version (PC version coming soon).
XVI note : The Hitachi GD-7000 on Mac is now completely region-free, the firmware has been tested (thanks to to www.macbidouille.com team and Pascal B.). The former "Hitachi GD-7x00 Reset" kit isn't needed anymore as this firmware is 100% region free. Enclosed utility will update the drive to the region-free X16E firmware, or if the drive is already running the X16E firmware, it will revert it to the region-locked 016E firmware. This single utility is enough to region-free or region-lock the drive. Except for the Pioneer Superdrive, the whole Mac product line is now fully region free.

- A new utility called CDVDInfo is out!! This utility created by Klaus Jensen is very similar with driveinfo but has option to save information about the settings of DVD and CDRW-drives to be added to a big drive firmware database.
- ASID provided updated and new NEC patched DVD firmware. They are v1.07 for DV-5500A, 1.91 for DV-5700B, 1.06 and 1.52 for DV-5800A. He also updated the NEC DVD FAQ to version 5.

- ASID provided updated patched firmware v3 for the NEC DVD drives. "These new patch stores DVD Region code and change counter into DVD drive flash memory once, and region changes you are doing afterwards are stored in RAM - so flash is not changed any more. This will avoid possible limitation of changing region code as many times as you wish - flash memory manufactures are reporting some limits of re-programming times (some models have 100 re-programming times reported)."

13/01/2001 : ASID the NEC DVD patcher provided 2 new patched firmware for the model DV-5700, they are 1.91 and 3.43.
There is one more feature in those Version 1.91 (D410R191.HEX) and Version 3.43 (D410R191.HEX) patches - they work also for locked DVD drives. They check counter contents, when it is requested from PC, and if counter is 0 (drive is locked), they report counter = 4. This lets to your DVD player SW think, that region code change is allowed, and it can be done. After code change counter is always 4. Remember!!! After flashing locked drives, even DRIVEINFO or another tool says, that counter is 4, actually it is not yet. It will be 4 after you apply code change from your DVD player software (change RPC code, let's say, from region 2 to region 1).

I received 4 patched firmware for the NEC DVD drives . They are 1.07 for NEC DV-5500 1.06, 1.30 and 1.91 for NEC DV-5700. They are not RPC-1. This patch updates NEC DVD-ROM Firmware to eliminate the decrement of the DVD region code change counter. After this patch you can change DVD region code on your DVD-ROM as many times as you wish - counter will be always 4.

22/12/2000 : DVD : A patch (for firmware 0.38) is available to make the Creative Labs DVD-1241E region free!! Patch by Roodkapje.
-The yesterday Pioneer DVD-U04/304S trick do not works correctly! If the drive is well detected as RPC-1 with driveinfo, in fact the drive is still RPC-2 (problems with some DVD software). The best solution is to wait for a patched firmware. Hey Fekete, wake up!

He also provided patched RPC-1 firmware 1.20 for the OEM drive RW-9120A drive like the Caravelle RW-1210DA and the Memorex MCW-1210DVD.
These firmware image have *not* yet been tested. Please be careful when applying the new firmware, and report back success or failure to me or on the firmware discussion board.
-XVI ask me to remove the patched firmware X120 for the panasonic DVD-RAM LF-D200 serie since the firmware seem to not be fully RPC-1.
If you flashed the drive, we recommand you to go back to the original A120 firmware.

17/09/2000 : Great week-end for RPC-1!!

DVD : - Added the long awaited firmware 1004 for the Toshiba SD-M1222. Available in original and patched RPC-1 versions. Patch by Noj the Toshiba expert.
- The great XVI provided a Macintosh utility to make the Hitachi DVD drives RPC-1 definitively!!!
It's not a firmware upgrade. It seem the Hitachi firmware contain both RPC-1 and RPC-2 code. The utility send an ATAPI command to the drive to activate the RPC-1 mode. The utility actually support the GD-3000 and GD-5000 models with all firmware versions.
The PC version will be available in the next days/weeks. Sorry PC users, you will have to wait or use a Mac :-)

- XVI provided some updated Macintosh versions of the Panasonic patched RPC-1 firmware (AX32 for SR-8184, X113 for SR-8174, 1X29 for SR-8585, z15C for SR-8584). The new version contain a new version of the flash utility who let you flash some non Apple drives.

24/08/2000 : DVD : John Johnson provided a patched version of the Samsung flash utility. With this one you are now able to flash the OEM Samsung SD-612 DVD drives like the Compaq SD-612B and the Creative Labs DVD1242E drives with RPC-1 firmware.

19/08/2000 : DVD : - XVI provided a new patched RPC-1 firmware AX32 for the Matsushita DVD-ROM SR-8184 (the one on the Imac). This file is based on the latest firmware AA32. MAC and PC versions are available.

CD-ROM : - Firmware PY06 and PY09 for the CD-ROM Sony CDU4811. And big surprise, the included flash utility let you extract your firmware. It works with the latest Sony CD-ROM, but it could maybe works with many other CD/DVD drives from different company!! Please let me know. 05/08/2000 : DVD : The firmware 1.40 for the Asus DVD-ROM E608 is confirmed to be still RPC-1. The firmware fix some reading bug.
I have removed the Panasonic SR-8585 firmware 1X29 Macintosh version since it doesn't works correctly. If you want to patch your drive, you have to flash the drive on a PC.

03/08/2000 : DVD : - Added firmware 1.40 for the DVD-ROM Asus E608 (probably a RPC-1 firmware, but i'm not sure, please confirm).
- A patched firmware 1.14 for the Pioneer DVD-105 is available (patch by Empoco). This firmware is not RPC-1 but set the drive region to 0. It works with PowerDVD but not with the Hollywood card and other DVD software. The patch can be considered as a beta one.
- The Macintosh Panasonic SR-8585 1X29 firmware version seem to have a little problem. If you succeed to flash your drive, please let me know.
- The PC version of the Panasonic SR-8174 RPC1 firmware works OK if you have an IBM computer, but not if you have an ACER one.

06/07/2000 : DVD : Great day!!!!! The RPC-2 Toshiba DVD drives are now region free!!!
A guy called TheDoctor submitted a working patch for the Toshiba DVD-ROM drives. This patch do not make the drive RPC-1 but viewing of movies from all 8 regions is enabled.
I have added the patched region free firmware version for the models SD-M1302, SD-M1402, SD-C2302, SD-C2402.

- DVDInfo : (Equivalent to Driveinfo on PC) Let you know the brand, model, and firmware version of your DVD drive, and if the drive is RPC-1 or RPC-2 (and in this case, the number of changes allowed).
- Region and Region Switch : Let you see and change the region of the Macintosh software player (only if the drive is RPC-1). No need to reboot!
- DVDReset : Let you change your drive region. (WARNING : 4 resets maximum). No need to reboot!

10/05/2000 :DVD :BIG NEWS!!!! I received 2 e-mail yesterday with the same file at the same minute from 2 totally different people. Thank you Paul Adams and Swampy.
That is the new Patched Firmware 2.00 RPC-1 for the Pioneer DVD-U03S/303S. They used the Codebyte patching method to the drive and it works!
- I also got no reply from the Samsung SD-608 owner if the BT01 firmware is really RPC-1, please let me know.
-The DVD speed page added some new benchmark for the latest DVD-ROM. Usefull if you want to buy a new drive.

09/05/2000 : 2 great news again!! DVD : A guy called Codebyte seem to have modified the Fekete Istvan Patched Pioneer DVDA04/104S firmware 2.02. And this time, you are able to flash a drive shipped originally with the 2.02 to RPC-1. Here is this new Patched 2.02 firmware.
- I also added firmware BT01 for the Samsung SD-608, this firmware seem to be an original RPC-1 version and can theorically also be used with the Compaq SD-608 and the Creative DVD-8401E drive and make them region free.

04/05/2000 : Great news!!!! Firmware 1X29 RPC1 for the Panasonic SR-8585. The firmware has been successfully patched by XVI. The other good news, is the firmware can also be used on the Creative DVD-8400E drives to make them region free. Make a look on the DVD page for more infos.
The Panasonic SR-8585/Creative DVD-8400E is a good 8X/40X drive, and is one of the rare drive able to read the DVD-RAM discs, it's also a fast drive in audio extraction.
I have removed the drive from the list of drives to boycott. Panasonic will probably sell lots of drives now! HEHE!

03/05/2000 : DVD : I just got a report the ASUS E-608 DVD drives manufactured in April 2000 with firmware 1.20 are STILL RPC-1. This is the last RPC-1 drive available. If you don't want to care about firmware upgrade, that is the drive to go for. Bravo ASUS!

The story : For this drive it exist a firmware RPC1 but only PIO-4 (c15C) and a firmware RPC2 who is Ultra-DMA (f15C). The version Ultra-DMA and RPC1 exist (called e15C) because present on some rare drives. For some unknow reasons Panasonic never released this firmware. A little bit irritated about that and for fun, XVI decided to make it himself. The firmware has been fully tested on MAC and PC and is working 100%.
2. For the Pioneer users, you can check the Fekete Istvan/Pioneer message board. There is some little problems with the 2.XX firmware. Pioneer seems to have protected them.
3. Added an older firmware 2.33 for the DVD-ROM Raite RDR-102H.

06/04/2000 : About the yesterday fekete Istvan firmware, yes, they works perfectly!
But for an unknow reason you can't use them if you have a drive with the "official" 2.02 firmware (the drive refuse to be flashed). They are only usable if you have a 1.XX firmware.

04/04/2000 : Pioneer special day!
For those who don't know :
-The latest Pioneer DVD-U03S/303S (6X/32X SCSI) are now shipped with a new firmware 2.00 who is RPC2 (even if you have the RPC pin on). This firmware can't be downgraded (aka can't use the patched RPC1 firmware). The drives manufactured after December 1999 have this new firmware.
-Same thing for the latest DVD-U04SZ/104S (10X/40X) with firmware 2.02 (can't use the RPC1 firmware). Drives manufactured before february have 1.23 firmware or older. February drives have 1.25 firmware. Drive manufactured after february 2000 have the new 2.02 firmware.
-Other subject, someone reported me to have a Pioneer DVD-304 drive (10X SCSI)! Pictures here. The drive has been cancelled by Pioneer and has never been commercialized. It's probably a rare pre-serie/prototype drive.
- The new model DVD-115 (16X40X) is available. First drive are shipped with a 1.08 firmware, RPC2 of course.

20/03/2000 : Another good news!! It's the Toshiba week-end! This time it's for the SD-M1302.
A guy called Neo provided a way to reset the drive region counter. The file contain a modified Toshiba flash utility (for allowing the counter reset). This solution is not perfect, you have to reflash the drive each time the counter reach 0, but it the only solution actually. Don't flash too much the flash chip seem to not support more than 100 flash. Flash only when it's absolutly need.

18/03/2000 : Here is the good news! A nice guy called Henryk patched the Toshiba flash utility to allow flashing a RPC2 firmware to RPC1 (previously it was not possible, the utility was protected).
Now the people with Toshiba SD-M1202, SD-M1212, SD-M1201 with RPC2 firmware are free to use the available RPC1 firmware.
Look in the DVD page to your drive to dowload what you need.

DVD : Bad news! New firmware 2.02 for the Pioneer DVD-A04SZ/A104S. (be very carrefull, this firmware is RPC-2 and do not allow the drive to be returned to a previous version of the firmware). It seem all the newest Pioneer drives will be shipped with this new firmware who will make the drive unable to use the modified firmware. It's already the case with the latest Pioneer DVD-303S drives with firmware 2.00.
Good news! There will be an EXCELLENT news to come soon! Some people with RPC-2 drives will be very happy! I can't say wich drive yet!

06/03/2000 : It seem very clear now DVD manufacturers will NEVER provide anymore RPC1 firmware. The future of region free drive is now in Firmware hacking like Fekete Istvan done with the Pioneer drives. If you have some good knowledge in programming or hacking, lots of thing are already available on the DVD page (the original RPC-2 firmware for some drive like the NEC DV-5500A, Panasonic SR-8585, Ricoh MP-9060A, all the DVD-RAM...). If you need some additional informations for some particular drives, please contact me.
When DVD manufacturers will see hacked firmware everywhere, they will probably ask them if RPC1 was not better afterall.

16/02/2000 : 1. Bad news : It seem the latest shipped Toshiba SD-M1212 (firmware 1022) and SD-M1201 (firmware 1011) are now RPC-2. If you got one of these drives, please contact me.
2. Good news for Hitachi GD-5000 owners. It seem there is a workaround to the lack of region free firmware. The idea is to use an old DVD software player written BEFORE the region setting was stored in the drive. To date, 2 software were used successfully: - Power DVD 1.22 (not 1.5 or 2.x they will NOT work) and the Creative DXR2 card with the drivers/player 3.00.1 (and probably older one). Of course with the appropriate crack (DVDgenie and remote selector). Thanks to Robert Bocquier for providing the info. I actually don't know if this trick works only with the GD-5000 or with all the RPC-2 drives (Toshiba SD-M1302, Nec DV-5500A...). The Creative driver is always available on the Creative site. Please don't ask me where is PowerDVD 1.22, i will not answer. If you try, please send me your results!

30/01/2000 : 1. I think it's time to launch a big boycott to all RPC-2 drives (the drives who are region locked in firmware). I have made a list of drives who are RPC-2 and can't be made region free here.
What you have to do :
-First, don't buy any of these drives.
-Return them to your resellers if you got one of them.
-Send tons of email to the companies who manufacture these drives.
I think the only way to make them changing position, is an economical pressure until they release a region free firmware (RPC1), like they do before.
After all RPC2 drive have no reason to exist since MPEG2/DVD software are already region protected.
2. Make a look in the message board. Message 1851. It's fun! (or how Toshiba will loose lot of money).
3 . In some country DVD drives with region protection are ILLEGAL! Make a look here.

26/01/2000 : 1. For people with RPC-2 DVD drives (like NEC DV-5500, Hitachi GD-5000, Toshiba SD-M1302...), please don't ask me when a region free firmware or utility will be available. I have no idea. That depend of the DVD manufactuer and i don't think they will make region free firmware available.
The best solution is to return your drive to your reseller if you could, and buy a know RPC-1 drive (look in the DVD page to know wich one are RPC-1). The recommended one actually is the ASUS drive who is fast and region free.
2. Pioneer announced in Cebit a 16X DVD-ROM drive.
3. Added firmware 1.40 for the CDRW/DVD Ricoh MP-9060A, 1.02 for the LG CD-ROM CDR-8400B and some new CDR firmware for Racer, Traxdata and Ricoh drives.

20/01/2000 : 1. Probably due to the pressure of other DVD manufacturers and/or DVD forum, LG removed the DRD-8080B region free utlity from their web site.
Hoppefully a backup of the page was made here. The utility only works with the LG drive finally.

22/11/99 : - Warning for Region code eraser users!!! The flash chip in the Pioneer drive only support around 100 flash cycle. It's not a problem for the 6X drive since you have to flash the drive only once, but for the 10X drive users to prevent Flash failures, use only the eraser when absolutly need!!!

Finally the Nec DV-5500A is not RPC-1. In fact, upon first insertion of DVD-Video disc it reports as region free, after insertion it becomes region locked.

17/11/99 : Fekete Istvan have some problems with the Pioneer people who ask him to remove the Region Code Eraser.
Making drives region free is not illegal. People do what they want with their drives.
They say the Eraser contained Pioneer copyrighted code, but it's not true. The soft use only some particular ATAPI command set.
Fekete remove temporaly the Eraser 2.0B from his page.
For more drive compatibility infos and how to use the utility continue to go to Fekete Istvan page and support him!!

With Pioneer DVD-A03/103S and DVD-113 drive, the region code eraser 2.0B make the drive region free (RPC-1) again, for people who accidentally removed the RPC jumper.
Tested with Pioneer DVD-A03/103S firmware 1.16, DVD-113 firmware 1.16.
Should also works with OEM drive like Compaq DVD-113 if you use the Pioneer firmware.

2. Ricoh announced a CD-R drive with DVD reading capability. More infos here.

3. Someone reported me a zone locked Toshiba SD-M1212 with a firmware 1008. This firmware is very rare. If you want to buy this drive, just look on the sticker on the top of the drive, the firmware version is indicated. Look on the DVD firmware page to see what version are region free. It's actually impossible to flash a RPC-2 drive to RPC-1 because the Toshiba flash utility is protected.

4. Recent Pioneer DVD firmware are now linked to Pioneer Japan who've got all the lastest versions.

Pioneer envisaged the possibility of modifying the reader by changing this internal card.
Here in France, Pioneer make the modification for 250Fr. (probably not anymore in 2000). Some people already successfully do it via Pioneer.

There is conflicting report about the new Pioneer DVD-114. Some drive look like to not have the RPC pins, other have it.

10/06/99 : -BAD NEWS Currently, many DVD-ROM drives have no region codes because they are manufactured based on RPC(Regional Playback Control) Phase1. Based on the RPC-1 system, MPEG decoders must have region codes, while drives do not have to have it. Based on RPC-2 system, drives must also have region codes protection. Any DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM drives must be manufactured and shipped based on RPC-2 from January 1st, 2000.  This is mandatory for manufacturer. This year is a transition period.
